Hey, hope everyone is well! I'm hoping that someone can help me with a few questions about the Keto diet?

I've seen lots of stuff online where people seem to have lost A LOT of weight using the Keto diet, but when I told my Mom that I was thinking of trying it, she went crazy. She says that it's the same as the Atkins Diet and that even if I do lose a lot of weight, it's really horrible for your health. Also, she said that it makes your breath smell really bad?

Is it the same as Atkins? Is it really bad for you? Does it really make your breath smell bad?

I would like to lose some weight, but my Mom kind of freaked me out with her reaction - does anyone have any advice?

Hi Princess!! Welcome to the site, hope you enjoy your stay here.

Well, both the Atkins diet and Keto involve using the "low carb" method of weight loss, so in some ways they are similar.

As far as making your breath smell...honestly, yes it can. If you are on a keto diet, you will produce something called acetone, which is excreted in breath and urine. To be fair, it doesn't last forever, and you can control it with breath mints, mouthwash or gum.

Is there a reason that your Mom is worried about your health while you diet? If you have past health issues, it's probably a really good idea to go for a check up and talk to your Doctor before you radically change your diet or anything.

Hi Elle and thank you for replying. OK, so I'm not super overweight or anything - I just need to lose 7-8lbs. My Mom thinks that Keto and things like that are going way overboard and I just need to be more careful with what I'm eating and do more sports or whatever.

Your Mom is probably right Princess.

Do you eat a lot of fruit and vegetables? Like, unprocessed food? And do you do any exercise right now?

If you're eating a lot of junk food and not moving enough, if I were you I would think about trying just one week without candy, fast food or anything else high fat. You don't have to go crazy and join a gym or anything - maybe just go for a short run each night when you get home.

At the end of the week, weigh yourself and see what (if anything) you've lost. This will give you a much better idea if this is something that you can get under control with just a couple of simple changes rather than a complete overhaul of how you eat!
