I am in serious trouble. I really am at a confusing point in my life. At the age of 25, I still don't have a boyfriend. I fit into a larger size every time I buy new clothes and it is embarrassing sometimes the way people look at me with disgust. I currently weigh around 210 pounds and with this disturbing burden that I carry along, I have made umpteen attempts to reduce my weight; I hit the gym daily, I jog in the evenings, I avoid fatty food, however, my weight seems to be comfortable at one number and refuses to budge. It was only until recently that a friend suggested that I might have a thyroid problem. I'm kind of devastated right now. I don't know what to do. Please help me out, someone.

Hey michelle, please don't be disheartened sweetie. Don't look down upon yourself. The thyroid is a gland that pumps out hormones that controls metabolism. If the gland is not performing well enough, your metabolism gets affected and in turn, you put on weight despite working out. But don't let that hamper your spirit. This is a disease, most commonly found in women. Women are more prone to it. One in eight women develop this problem. Even Oprah Winfrey has Thyroid problems. And look where she is today. Take her as your inspiration and make it your motto in life to fight this problem. Whatever you do, don't give up!

Michelle, as rightly explained by karen, thyroid disease does have an affinity for women and is more attracted towards us than men. However just raising your hands and expecting pity from others is not the solution. I would suggest you visit your physician and first understand what kind of thyroid disease this is, as per my knowledge, there are different kinds of thyroid diseases that can affect a person. Understanding the problem is the first step. Then, I'm sure he (physician) will suggest medication and a particular diet to follow which you should, religiously. If you follow this with the right intention and dedication, I'm sure you will get your weight down to the right figure in no time. Wishing you success.

Hey michelle, as for the boys and others who look at you with disgust, shame on them. Ignore them. They are the lunatics who cannot see inner beauty. To hell with them.

Hey michelle, as stella rightly said, there are different kinds of thyroid diseases that affect women namely hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroiditis, goiter, thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. I'm sure the last one is out of the picture. You can first find out which kind of disease is the problem here and then simultaneously search for solutions. Hope this helps.
